Screens determine product specification. A crushing circuit with undersized or poorly maintained screening capacity produces out-of-spec material regardless of how good the crushers are.
Inclined vibrating screens are the general-purpose workhorse for aggregate sizing. Horizontal screens suit lower headroom and give finer separation. Trommel screens handle wet, sticky and contaminated material better than vibrating decks. Scalping screens remove oversize and fines ahead of the primary crusher, which protects the crusher and improves throughput.
Mobile tracked screens suit contractors and recycling operators moving between sites; static installations suit fixed quarries.
Screen media condition across every deck, and the availability of replacement mesh in the sizes you need. Vibrating mechanism, bearings and drive — listen for bearing noise under load, as with any vibratory machine. Screen box structure for cracking, which concentrates at the corners and around the mounting points. Springs and isolation mounts. Conveyors, belts and drives on mobile plant. And the feed arrangement and chutes for wear.
Screening capacity must match crushing capacity or the whole circuit throttles at the screen. When buying into an existing plant, work from your actual throughput and product splits rather than the screen's nameplate rating — nameplate figures assume ideal feed material that nobody has.
