Used tank trucks

Tanker specification is determined by the product, and getting it wrong is a compliance problem rather than just a performance one. A tank built for water is not a tank for fuel, and neither is a tank for chemicals.

Match the tank to the product

Water tankers serve dust suppression, compaction and site supply, with potable units requiring specific tank material and certification. Fuel tankers need compartmentation, correct venting, earthing and product-appropriate fittings. Chemical and industrial tankers require material compatibility with the specific product and the certification to match. Vacuum and pressure tankers serve waste, sewage and oilfield service duty.

Do not plan to repurpose a tank between these categories. Previous carriage history affects what a tank may legally and safely carry afterwards.

Inspection

Tank shell condition inside and out, corrosion, and baffle integrity — a tanker with failed baffles surges dangerously under braking and is genuinely unsafe to drive. Manways, valves, vents and fittings. Pump and its output tested under load, and hose and coupling condition. Any heating or insulation system.

Then the certification: tank test and inspection dates, and for hazardous product carriage, the current certification status. An out-of-test tank is not a working asset until it has been tested, and that cost belongs in your purchase price.

The chassis

Assess the truck underneath as you would any heavy vehicle. Tankers run heavy and constantly, so brakes, suspension and tyres deserve particular attention, and a fully laden brake test is the check that matters.
