Compaction is where earthworks either meets specification or gets rebuilt. In UAE road construction and reclamation, achieving density in sand is a genuinely demanding problem and the machine type matters.
Smooth drum vibratory rollers are the default for granular material, sand and asphalt — vibration is what actually achieves density in sand, and a static machine on granular fill will not get there. Padfoot and sheepsfoot rollers work cohesive material, clay and mixed fill by kneading rather than vibrating. Pneumatic tyred rollers seal and finish asphalt surfaces and work well on mixed material. Combination machines pair a drum with pneumatic tyres.
For most UAE earthworks in sand and granular fill, a smooth drum vibratory machine is the answer, and the health of its vibratory system is therefore the health of the machine.
The vibratory system first: eccentric weights, bearings and the drive. Listen for bearing noise at both amplitudes and confirm both amplitude settings function. A roller with a failing vibratory bearing is an expensive repair and the symptom is audible to anyone who listens for it.
Then drum surface condition and any dents or flat spots, drum mounting and isolation mounts, articulation joint, water spray system including tank, pump and nozzles — asphalt work is impossible without it and the nozzles block constantly. Check drive motors and hydrostatic performance on a gradient.
Single-drum machines in the 10–15 tonne class handle most UAE earthworks and reclamation compaction. Tandem drum rollers from 3–10 tonnes cover asphalt. Small walk-behind and trench rollers serve utility reinstatement and confined compaction.
