A wheeled excavator drives itself between job sites. On urban utility and maintenance work with frequent short moves, that single fact often outweighs everything a tracked machine does better.
Every lowbed movement costs money and half a day. A contractor working several small sites across Dubai or Sharjah in a week can spend more on machine transport than on fuel. A wheeled machine drives between them on the road under its own power, and on that work pattern it pays back the premium quickly.
Soft sand and loose fill — it will struggle where a tracked machine works comfortably. Sustained bulk excavation, where stability and cycle-time advantage favour tracks. Rough and uneven ground. If the machine is going onto one site and staying there for months, buy tracks.
Outriggers or a dozer blade for digging stability are effectively required, not optional — a wheeled machine digging without them is limited and unsafe. Check tyre condition and matching across axles, and the road-travel functions: lights, signalling, brakes and the travel hydraulics. If the machine will be used on UAE public roads, confirm it can be registered and plated for that before you buy, because retrofitting compliance is expensive.
Axles, drive shafts and steering components carry loads a tracked machine never applies — inspect them specifically. Beyond that the usual excavator checks apply: boom and stick welds, pin and bushing play, cylinder rod condition, slew ring, and hydraulic oil analysis.
