Graders are precision machines sold as earthmoving equipment, and they are judged almost entirely on the condition of components most buyers never inspect: the circle, the drawbar and the mouldboard mountings.

UAE demand

Road construction and rehabilitation, site levelling to specified tolerances, haul road maintenance on quarry and industrial sites, and formation preparation ahead of paving. With Dubai's road programme and continued infrastructure work across the Emirates, graders stay in demand and hold value better than most classes.

Where the value is

Circle and drawbar wear is the thing to check, and it is the thing least often checked. Excessive circle wear means the blade cannot hold a line, which defeats the purpose of owning a grader — you can move material with anything, but only a grader in good condition will hold grade. Test it by rotating the circle through its full range under load and watching for play and hesitation.

Then: mouldboard condition and cutting edge life, blade lift cylinders and their mountings, articulation joint play, tandem drive housings for leakage and bearing noise, and front axle and lean mechanism. All-wheel drive, where fitted, is valuable on soft UAE surfaces but is another system to check functioning.

Size and configuration

Mid-size machines in the 140–160 class handle most UAE road and site work. Larger 16-class machines suit mining haul roads and heavy formation work. Rear rippers and scarifiers are worth having for rehabilitation work and hard-crust material; front blades and push blocks less commonly so here.

Grade control

Machines with laser or GPS grade control fetch a premium and earn it on tolerance-critical work. Verify the system is complete, functional and — importantly — that its components are current enough to be supported and supplied, because an orphaned proprietary system on an otherwise good machine is a liability rather than an asset.
