Wheel loaders run the highest utilisation hours of any machine in this market — aggregate yards, ready-mix batching plants, block factories and general site loading. They are bought on cycle time and sold on how honestly their transmission has been treated.
Size a loader by the truck it is filling and the material density, not by bucket capacity in isolation. Three to four passes to fill a tipper is the efficient target: fewer and you are probably carrying more machine than you need; more and the loader is the bottleneck for the whole site. Material density matters more than volume — a bucket sized for sand is oversized for aggregate.
Transmission and torque converter are the expensive failures, and they are caused by operator habit: shuttling between forward and reverse under load, and holding the machine against the pile on the torque converter. Ask about operator history and check for shift harshness, delayed engagement and converter stall behaviour. Articulation joint and steering cylinders take heavy cyclic loading — play there is both costly and a safety issue. Tyres are a significant line item: on a 4 m³ machine a full set is a serious expense, and mismatched or heavily worn tyres on a loader that works hard should be priced into the deal.
Heavy-duty air filtration with pre-cleaner, because loader yards are dust generators. Upgraded cooling for summer. Quick coupler if the machine will carry forks as well as a bucket — a loader that can change to pallet forks does double duty at block plants and material yards. Ride control improves cycle times and reduces spillage on longer hauls.
