Pipeline construction across Western Canada keeps sidebooms working hard: oil and gas gathering and transmission lines, water mains, and large-diameter industrial pipe. Pipelayers are specialist machines, and buyers judge them on lift capacity and the condition of the boom.
A pipelayer is a tracked tractor with a side-mounted boom on one side and a counterweight on the other. It is built to carry pipe along the right-of-way and lower it into the trench. The tracked base handles soft, uneven and frozen ground. The counterweight lets the machine carry heavy loads out to the side without tipping.
Lift capacity is the main number, but it drops as the boom reaches further out. Check the load chart at the radius you will actually work at. Match the boom length to your pipe diameter and trench depth. The counterweight design, whether fixed or hydraulically extendable, affects both what the machine can lift and how wide it is to haul. Common models include the CAT PL61, PL72, PL83 and PL87, earlier CAT 561, 572, 583 and 587 units, and Komatsu D155C sidebooms.
Ask for the inspection and load test certification and the date it was done (ASME B30.14 covers side boom tractors). A current certificate adds real value to a lifting machine.
Alberta’s pipeline industry is one of the world’s largest sources of well-maintained sidebooms, and we buy here directly. Global Wholesale Machinery sources, inspects and ships pipelayers from Nisku to buyers across Canada, the U.S. and overseas. Tell us your lift capacity and boom length, and we’ll find the right machine.
