Haul trucks are bought on cost per tonne moved, which makes cycle time and availability the only figures that matter. They are also machines where frame and articulation condition decides whether a purchase is an asset or a liability.
Articulated or rigid
Articulated dump trucks handle soft, uneven and steep ground and are the more flexible choice for construction earthworks, reclamation and mixed conditions — which describes most UAE bulk work outside fixed quarries. Rigid haul trucks carry more per cycle and cost less per tonne on well-maintained haul roads, which means they suit established quarry and mining operations with proper road infrastructure.
Inspection priorities
The articulation joint and hitch on an ADT is the critical structural item — play, wear or repair history there is significant and expensive. Frame and chassis for cracking and prior weld repair, particularly around suspension and body mountings. Body condition, wear liners and the tipping cylinders and mountings.
Then the drivetrain: transmission and torque converter behaviour, differentials and final drives, and the suspension struts, which on a haul truck are a serious cost item and are frequently tired on a used machine. Tyres, which on any size of haul truck represent a large capital figure on their own — check matching, wear and, on the larger classes, availability in the region.
Ask for haul records
Hours tell you less about a haul truck than tonnes and cycle counts do. A truck that has spent its life on a short flat haul is a different machine from one that has run long gradients, at the same hour meter reading. Ask what it was hauling, how far and up what.
