Generator sets serve construction sites, industrial standby, event power and permanent installations where grid supply is absent or unreliable. They are bought on kVA and sold on how they were loaded.
Size to actual load with headroom for motor starting surge. Motors draw several times their running current at start, and a generator sized only to steady-state load will stall or drop voltage when a large motor starts.
The opposite error is equally real. A heavily oversized generator running at low load wet-stacks — unburnt fuel accumulates in the exhaust system — which damages the engine progressively. Running a generator continuously below roughly a third of its rating is a slow way of destroying it, and it is extremely common on sites where someone specified generously.
These ratings are not interchangeable. Standby rating assumes emergency use only with limited annual hours. Prime rating allows unlimited hours with a varying load. Continuous rating allows unlimited hours at constant load. Buying a standby-rated set for prime duty produces a short and disappointing service life.
Engine hours and service history, with oil analysis. Alternator condition, including insulation resistance testing. Control panel, automatic voltage regulator and — where fitted — the automatic transfer switch. Cooling system and radiator condition, which matters considerably at UAE ambient temperatures. Fuel system, tank and containment. Acoustic enclosure condition on canopied sets.
Load bank testing before purchase is worth its cost on any substantial unit. It is the only way to establish what the set actually delivers under load rather than what its plate says, and it reveals cooling and regulation problems that no static inspection will.
