Used telehandlers

Telehandlers replaced the site forklift on most UAE construction projects for one reason: rough ground. A telescopic handler places material at height and reach across unfinished terrain that an industrial forklift cannot cross.

Specifying by reach, not by capacity

The capacity figure on a telehandler is its maximum, at minimum reach, and it falls away sharply as the boom extends. A machine rated at 4 tonnes may lift well under half that at full extension and height. Read the load chart for the reach and height you actually work at, not the headline number — this is the most common specification mistake made on these machines.

Typical UAE duty

Placing blockwork and materials on multi-storey construction, unloading deliveries on unfinished sites, feeding scaffold and formwork crews, and general site handling. Rotating telehandlers, which slew the boom without repositioning the chassis, are valuable on constrained sites but carry a substantial price premium and more to go wrong.

Inspection

Boom wear pads and extension chains are the wear items that matter — worn pads cause boom deflection and eventually structural damage, and chain condition and adjustment are a safety-critical item. Check boom sections for distortion and the welds at the pivot. Then the load chart decal and any load moment indicator system: confirm it is present and functional, because on a machine that will be inspected on a UAE site, it needs to be. Attachment carriage and locking mechanism, outriggers where fitted, and tyre condition — telehandler tyres are expensive and often neglected.
